GAINESVILLE, FL – The University of Florida has announced plans for a $1.45 billion modernization of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, marking one of the most ambitious—and comprehensive—venue redevelopment efforts in the history of college athletics. The project is designed to preserve the iconic character of “The Swamp” while addressing critical infrastructure needs, improving accessibility, and enhancing the overall fan experience.
“I don’t think holistically it will change at all,” said Director of Athletics Scott Stricklin. “Our tagline for this is going to be, ‘Bigger, Better, Louder.’ More structure is going to hold in more sound. This is going to be a louder environment.”
When describing the scale of the project, Stricklin noted that only a handful of recent stadium redevelopments compare in scope, citing Texas A&M’s renovation of Kyle Field in 2014 and Penn State’s ongoing renovation of Beaver Stadium. Those projects carried estimated construction costs of approximately $450 million and $750 million, respectively.
Planned improvements include expanded concourses, upgraded restroom and concession facilities, enhanced stadium connectivity, improved circulation and entry points, and significant investments in premium hospitality offerings.
The renovation will also address long-term maintenance requirements and accessibility upgrades while maintaining the stadium’s distinctive bowl configuration and close-to-the-field seating experience that have made Ben Hill Griffin Stadium one of college football’s most recognizable venues. Current plans call for the stadium to remain operational throughout construction, with a phased implementation strategy allowing Florida football to continue playing home games on campus.
University officials have emphasized that the project is intended to strengthen, rather than redefine, the identity of the historic facility. By combining modern amenities, updated infrastructure, and expanded revenue-generating opportunities with the traditions and atmosphere that define Florida football, the renovation seeks to position Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the next generation of student-athletes and fans. Funding is expected to come from a combination of private philanthropy, capital reserves, project-generated revenues, and long-term financing strategies.
“It’s a big checklist of what we’re trying to accomplish,” Stricklin said. “I’m very excited because I think when people walk into it for the first time, they’re going to be blown away, and the money’s going to seem very well spent.”
As architect-of-record for the renovation, Crawford Architects is providing overall design leadership for the project, helping guide the transformation of one of collegiate athletics’ most storied venues into a modern stadium experience while preserving the traditions that make “The Swamp” unique. Construction is anticipated to begin following the 2027 football season, with completion targeted for 2030, coinciding with the stadium’s centennial anniversary.
