South Dakota State University takes another step forward to delivering the first on-campus home for Jackrabbit Soccer since the program’s founding in 2000. Our team had the privilege of attending last week’s ground breaking presentation, celebrating the major milestone for both the University and the passionate young athletes who will call this venue home.
Officially dubbed the Dakota Layers Stadium, this initiative will replace the team’s current venue at Fishback Soccer Park (3.5 miles south of campus), in favor of a competition-ready venue prominently located at the intersection of Jackrabbit Avenue and North Campus Road. The project will create a new destination for NCAA Division I soccer while strengthening the connection between student-athletes, fans, and the University community.
Designed to support both current needs and future growth, the stadium will feature a NCAA Division I natural grass competition field, aluminum grandstand seating for approximately 500 to 750 spectators, and additional standing-room capacity for larger events. The design also incorporates future seating expansion opportunities, allowing the venue to evolve as attendance, community support, and program success continue to grow.
A new 4,450-square-foot Soccer Operations Building, intended to serve as a shared resource between the soccer stadium and adjacent Erv Huether Field, will maximize operational efficiency while providing long-term value. The planned facility includes team suites, locker rooms, meeting and classroom spaces, concessions, spectator restrooms, and storage.
Additionally, the project will include a broadcast-capable press box, updated sports lighting, a fixed scoreboard, and covered, heated team benches—all intended to enhance the student-athlete and fan experience while creating a premier home soccer venue for generations of Jackrabbits to come.
