Tse Ping Cheng Cheung Ling Sports Center

“Renovation Creates State-Of-The-Art Multi-Purpose Campus Gymnasium”

Tse Ping – Cheng Cheung Ling Sports Center, formerly Hutchinson Gymnasium, needed an extensive renovation to meet the needs of the 21st century intercollegiate athletes and recreational users. Crawford Architects conducted a feasibility study and evaluated past building plans. The multipurpose sports center provides practice space for basketball, fencing, golf, gymnastics, and rowing programs. Interestingly, the basketball practice courts were created within the shell of the old natatorium. There are new locker areas, a training room, meeting rooms, basketball administration offices, and offices for development and the staff of the historic Penn Relays event. The unique light steel-framed trusses and skylights were preserved.

This design shows what can happen when a wonderful and talented firm of architects is brought in. Their ingenious adaptive reuse of a decommissioned natatorium resulted in a multi-purpose gymnasium for the campus.
