Shawn Walsh Center / Alfond Arena

A First-Class, Modern Hockey Facility

Crawford Architects, in collaboration with local partner WBRC Inc., provided architectural design services for the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and Harold Alfond Sports Arena at the University of Maine. This transformative project modernized approximately 31,000 square feet of existing space and added 21,000 square feet of new construction, significantly enhancing facilities for the Black Bears’ Division I men’s and women’s ice hockey programs while reinforcing the arena’s role as a premier campus and community destination.

The renovation delivers a full suite of high-performance athletic amenities, including state-of-the-art locker rooms and player lounges, a centralized player development center, advanced strength and conditioning spaces, upgraded sports medicine and hydrotherapy areas, and a dedicated 42-seat film room. Team operations were further strengthened through new offices, equipment areas, and support spaces, while the public experience was elevated with a reimagined concourse entrance featuring modern concessions, ticketing, a team store, and the Dexter Lounge.

Completed in 2025 as part of the University of Maine Athletics Facilities Master Plan, the project thoughtfully balances legacy and innovation within the iconic ice hockey venue. The renewed Shawn Walsh Athletic Center and Alfond Arena create a vibrant, hockey-forward environment while positioning the program for long-term competitive success.
